Researchers at IIT Delhi have developed the world’s lightest bulletproof jacket. This jacket weighing only 8.2 kg is capable of stopping eight bullets coming from AK-47 guns and other weapons of the same class, its makers claim. As it is 2 kg lighter than the bulletproof vest currently used by the Indian Army, it is expected to make it relatively easier and safer for the Jawans to wear and improve their efficiency.

This research team has also made another type of jacket weighing 9.5 kg, which is capable of stopping six rifle bullets, said Naresh Bhattnagar, the head professor of the research team. However, they have been researching for fifteen years to make this class of clothes. In 2008, the Indian Army proposed to make this type of bulletproof jacket.

The jackets used by the Jawans at that time were usually made of heavy materials such as iron. Therefore, the weight of the jacket was 22 to 25 kg, so it was difficult for the Jawans to carry it with other equipment. Emphasis was placed on preparing jackets as light as possible to make them more active on the front lines of the battlefield. The project involved 25 M.Tech and 12 Ph.D. students who worked hard to make the jacket as light as possible. However, they did not think that it would be the lightest in the world. At the NATO conference in Germany next month, the said Indian jacket was used in the jackets used by the Japanese, which usually used heavy material like iron. Therefore, the weight of the jacket was 22 to 25 kg, so it was difficult for the Javanese to carry it with other equipment. The said Indian jacket will be displayed at the ‘NATO’ conference to be held in Germany next month. It is hoped that it will be integrated into the Indian Army soon.
