Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India on Wednesday as Chandrayaan 3’s Vikram lander successfully landed on the Moon’s South Pole.
Modi, who watched the momentous event virtually from Johannesburg, South Africa, called it a historic achievement and a sign of India’s progress. He spoke to the ISRO scientists and commended their work.
In a tweet, Modi congratulated ISRO for the success of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, calling it a significant day for India’s space endeavors.
Modi expressed his pride in India’s commitment to exploring space and achieving the feat of landing on the Moon. He emphasized that this accomplishment, particularly landing on the lunar south pole, would change how we think about the Moon.
The Vikram lander touched down on the Moon’s surface at 6:04 local time, prompting celebrations among the scientists in Bengaluru who were watching the event.
After an unsuccessful attempt almost four years ago, India made history by becoming the first nation to land near the lesser-known southern region of the Moon. This achievement puts India alongside the United States, the Soviet Union, and China in the prestigious group of countries that have achieved lunar landings.
The Chandrayaan 3 mission started on July 14, with a 41-day journey on the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-3) rocket to reach the lunar south pole.
The successful landing of the Vikram lander comes after Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the Moon due to losing control.
The lander and the six-wheeled rover, with a total weight of 1,752 kg, are expected to function for about 14 Earth days, which is one lunar daylight period.
Equipped with sensors such as accelerometers, altimeters, Doppler velocimeters, and cameras for navigation and safety, the lander had a careful design to ensure a safe landing with its four legs.
