The tragic murder of 19-year-old receptionist Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand continues to grip the nation, with persistent and increasingly vocal demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe echoing across India. Despite the conviction of three key accused in May 2025, fresh allegations concerning the involvement of an influential “VIP” have reignited public outrage and prompted widespread protests, raising serious questions about the initial investigation’s scope and impartiality. The renewed calls highlight a deep-seated public yearning for complete transparency and justice in a case that has come to symbolize the challenges of securing accountability in sensitive matters.
Ankita Bhandari, a young woman from Pauri Garhwal, had been working as a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Ganga-Bhogpur, Rishikesh, for less than a month when she mysteriously disappeared on September 18, 2022. Her family’s initial attempts to register a First Information Report (FIR) were met with delays, eventually leading to a complaint being filed with the revenue police. However, it was only after the case was transferred to the regular police force that a breakthrough occurred. On September 23, 2022, the resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of then-BJP leader Vinod Arya, along with resort manager Saurabh Bhaskar and assistant manager Ankit Gupta, were arrested in connection with her disappearance. Their confession led to the recovery of Ankita’s body from the Chilla canal on September 24, 2022. Post-mortem reports confirmed drowning as the cause of death, with injuries indicative of assault.
The subsequent state police investigation, conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), found that Ankita was allegedly murdered after she refused to provide “special services” to a “VIP guest” at the resort. This explosive detail sparked immediate public fury. In May 2025, a district court in Kotdwar found Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar, and Ankit Gupta guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. While the verdict brought a measure of legal closure, many, including Ankita’s parents, expressed dissatisfaction, believing the sentence was insufficient and that deeper truths remained unearthed.
The core of the current unrest stems from lingering suspicions surrounding the alleged “VIP” angle, which critics claim was not fully pursued by the state SIT and was conspicuously absent from the charge sheet. Recent developments, including widely circulated audio and video recordings purportedly made by Urmila Sanawar (who claims to be the estranged wife of a former BJP MLA), have directly implicated a senior BJP leader, Dushyant Kumar Gautam, as the “VIP” involved. These allegations, though vehemently denied by Gautam, who has filed a defamation suit, have fueled widespread protests in Uttarakhand and even reached Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Protesters, including opposition parties like the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, civil society groups, and citizens, demand a CBI probe to uncover the identity and role of any high-profile individuals.
Another critical point of contention has been the rapid demolition of parts of the Vanantra Resort shortly after the murder came to light. While authorities cited illegal construction as the reason, many, including Ankita’s family and various advocacy groups, view this act as a deliberate attempt to destroy crucial evidence, further eroding trust in the state’s handling of the case. The alleged initial laxity of the revenue police in registering the complaint also drew sharp criticism.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has addressed the renewed demands, stating that the state government is prepared for any further investigation, including a CBI inquiry, if credible evidence is presented. He has also ordered a new SIT probe to verify the authenticity of the recently emerged audio clips and allegations. However, this assurance has done little to quell the skepticism of those demanding a central agency probe, who argue that only an independent investigation can fully address the perceived loopholes and ensure unbiased justice. The case continues to resonate deeply across India, evolving into a poignant symbol of the ongoing struggle for justice for victims, especially when powerful connections are suspected to be at play. The demand for a CBI probe is not merely a procedural request but a collective plea for the complete truth and unequivocal accountability, regardless of status or influence.
