Bhubaneswar, 7/1 : The Odisha capital is gearing up for its much-anticipated Annual Flower Show, promising a vibrant spectacle of nature’s finest from January 9. Organizers have revealed an array of exciting new features and expanded timings, aiming to captivate an even larger audience of horticulture enthusiasts and general visitors alike. The popular event, a highlight in the city’s cultural calendar, will transform the Exhibition Ground, Unit-III, into a kaleidoscopic display of floral artistry and botanical diversity.

Scheduled to run for five days, concluding on January 13, the show will open its gates daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, an extension of an hour compared to previous years, allowing evening visitors ample time to explore the illuminated displays. This year, the organizers, primarily the Horticulture Department in collaboration with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and local gardening associations, are placing a significant emphasis on sustainability and indigenous flora. A dedicated section will showcase rare and endangered plant species native to Odisha, educating visitors on their conservation importance.

Among the standout new features is a ‘Vertical Garden Showcase,’ demonstrating innovative urban gardening solutions. This display will highlight space-saving techniques and the aesthetic appeal of vertical greenery, offering practical inspiration for city dwellers. Another exciting addition is the ‘Children’s Garden Zone,’ designed to engage younger visitors with interactive exhibits, potting workshops, and a scavenger hunt focused on identifying different flower types. This initiative aims to foster a love for nature and gardening from an early age.

For gardening aficionados, the show will host a series of expert-led workshops and seminars daily. Topics will range from organic gardening practices, pest management, and the art of bonsai to floral arrangement techniques and water-efficient landscaping. These sessions, free to attend, are expected to draw significant interest from amateur gardeners and professionals seeking to enhance their skills. Furthermore, the ‘Best Home Garden’ competition, a long-standing tradition, has been expanded this year to include categories for terrace gardens and community gardens, encouraging broader participation.

Food stalls featuring local delicacies and refreshments will also be available, providing a complete family outing experience. Special evening cultural performances, showcasing Odishan folk music and dance, have been scheduled for the weekends, adding another layer of attraction to the event. Authorities have also implemented enhanced accessibility measures, including designated pathways and seating areas, to ensure a comfortable experience for all visitors, including the elderly and those with disabilities.

“We are incredibly excited about this year’s Annual Flower Show,” stated a spokesperson for the Horticulture Department. “Our goal is not just to display beautiful flowers, but to educate, inspire, and promote environmental consciousness. The new features, particularly the focus on sustainable practices and engaging children, reflect our commitment to making this event more impactful and inclusive than ever before. We encourage everyone to visit and witness the breathtaking beauty and innovative ideas on display.”

The meticulous planning and the introduction of these novel elements underscore the organizers’ dedication to elevating the Annual Flower Show into a premier horticultural event in Eastern India. With an estimated footfall of over 50,000 visitors expected over the five days, the show promises to be a vibrant celebration of nature, art, and community spirit in the heart of Odisha’s capital.
