Bengaluru, India’s tech hub, has been shaken by a shocking turn of events in the death of a 34-year-old software engineer, Sharmila D.K., whose demise was initially believed to be a tragic fire accident. Police investigations have now conclusively revealed that Sharmila was brutally murdered in her Ramamurthy Nagar apartment on January 3, 2026, by her 18-year-old neighbour, Karnal Kurai, following her staunch refusal of his sexual advances. The shocking details emerging from the police probe indicate a premeditated act of violence, where the fire was meticulously staged to conceal the horrific crime.
The incident unfolded on the night of January 3, 2026, when fire and emergency services responded to reports of smoke emanating from Sharmila D.K.’s rented two-bedroom apartment in Subramanya Layout, Ramamurthy Nagar. Sharmila, a dedicated software engineer with Accenture and originally hailing from Kavoor in Mangaluru, was alone at home, as her flatmate was visiting her hometown. Upon extinguishing the flames, firefighters discovered Sharmila’s body, which was initially believed to have succumbed to suffocation caused by the blaze. The initial assessment pointed towards an accidental death, possibly due to an electrical short circuit.
However, the police investigation, spurred by suspicions raised by one of Sharmila’s friends, soon took a darker trajectory. The Ramamurthy Nagar police registered a case of unnatural death, initiating a thorough examination. Scene of Crime Officers and forensic experts meticulously scoured the apartment, quickly ruling out an electrical fault as the origin of the fire. The turning point came with the post-mortem report, which indicated injuries inconsistent with accidental burns and, more critically, confirmed that Sharmila had been smothered before the fire even began. Signs of a struggle were also evident, pointing unequivocally to foul play.

He admitted to having entered Sharmila’s flat through a sliding window around 9 PM on January 3, with the express intention of seeking sexual favours. In a desperate attempt to destroy evidence and mislead authorities, he allegedly gathered some of Sharmila’s clothes and other incriminating materials, placed them on the bedroom mattress, and set them ablaze before fleeing the scene. He also confessed to stealing her mobile phone while escaping.
Karnal Kurai has since been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 103(1) for murder, 64(2) for punishment related to rape, 66 for causing death in a vegetative state, and 238 for destruction of evidence. He was subsequently remanded to police custody for three days as investigations continue to piece together the full extent of the crime and gather further evidence to strengthen the case against him.
