Puri: Preparations for the annual Rath Yatra have officially begun in Puri, with the traditional rituals marking the auspicious approval of the chariot wood completed this week. Every year, the process starts from Basanta Panchami, while the actual construction of the chariots begins from Akshaya Tritiya. For 2026, the rituals were performed on Friday, when the chariot wood was blessed, ensuring its suitability for the festival.

Following tradition, the Sripanchami ceremony involved the worship of three sections of 12-foot Dhau wood for the three Rathas, performed by the Rajguru and priests in front of the Sri Mandir administration office. A total of 865 pieces of wood are required for the construction of all three chariots. In the first phase, 83 pieces of Rath wood arrived in Puri from Nayagarh Banakhand on the 20th and were stored for use. The remaining wood will be brought in stages over the coming days.

The next step will begin on Ram Navami, when the chariot wood carving process will commence. The temple administration has expressed hope that this year’s Rath Yatra will conclude peacefully and in a disciplined manner, with devotees offered prayers for a safe and harmonious festival.
