New Delhi, 5/1 : Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump, likening his actions to those of dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Kharge also took a direct shot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of bending to US pressure and compromising India’s foreign policy. The remarks were made to reporters in New Delhi.

Kharge’s strong statements focused on what he described as Trump’s “expansionism,” particularly citing US actions in Venezuela that led to the ouster of leader Maduro. He asserted that leaders who attempt to expand their territories, much like Hitler and Mussolini, ultimately do not remain in power for long. The Congress chief also referenced Trump’s repeated claims about resolving the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, interpreting this as an attempt by Trump to “frighten people across the globe” and force nations to bow to his will. Kharge underlined the importance of democratic methods and India’s long-standing policy of “live and let live,” a principle he attributed to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Turning his criticism towards Prime Minister Modi, Kharge invoked a popular dialogue from the 1989 Hindi film “Mr. India,” stating, “‘Mogambo khush hua’ (Mogambo is happy).” This reference was made in response to Trump’s recent statements implying unhappiness with India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, despite Russia being engaged in conflict with Ukraine since February 2022. Kharge interpreted this as an indication that Prime Minister Modi is “under Trump’s control,” questioning why the Indian government was yielding to such demands. He stressed that while India is not one to cower, Modi’s perceived compliance was detrimental to the nation’s interests. Kharge further reiterated India’s historic adherence to a non-aligned foreign policy, suggesting a deviation from this path under the current government.

The Congress President’s comments highlight ongoing political tensions regarding international relations and domestic leadership.
