Bhubaneswar, 12/1 : In a significant political development that could reshape the opposition landscape in Odisha, senior leader and former Cuttack-Barabati MLA Mohammed Moquim led a massive youth demonstration and convention in the capital city today. The event, billed as a “Yuva Samavesh” (Youth Convention), saw the participation of over 1,200 emerging youth leaders from across the state, serving as a potent show of strength just weeks after Moquim’s expulsion from the Congress party.
The atmosphere in Bhubaneswar was charged as young activists, primarily from Odisha’s coastal districts, gathered to pledge their support to Moquim. Addressing the spirited crowd, Moquim articulated a vision for a “New Odisha” leading up to 2036, the centenary year of the state’s formation. He emphasized that the current political vacuum in the state demands a fresh, youth-centric approach, distinct from the traditional structures of the BJD, BJP, and Congress.
“The youth of Odisha are looking for a platform where their voices are not just heard but valued. Today’s gathering is not just a crowd; it is the foundation of a new political alternative that will prioritize merit, transparency, and regional pride,” Moquim declared to thunderous applause. He criticized the existing state leadership of national parties for being disconnected from grassroots realities, a sentiment that resonated deeply with the attendees, many of whom are disenchanted with the current political stagnation.
This demonstration marks Moquim’s first major public mobilization since his expulsion from the Indian National Congress in mid-December 2025 for alleged “anti-party activities”—a move triggered by his letter to Sonia Gandhi questioning the state unit’s efficacy. Far from being sidelined, today’s turnout suggests Moquim retains a formidable base of loyalists.
During the event, Moquim confirmed that this mobilization is a prelude to a formal political launch. He announced that the blueprint for his new regional party is in its final stages and will be officially unveiled by the end of March 2026. The convention focused heavily on creating a roadmap for employment, youth engagement in governance, and structural reforms.
Political analysts view today’s rally as a litmus test for Moquim’s organizational capabilities outside the Congress fold. The successful turnout of over 1,200 dedicated youth organizers indicates that he may pose a credible challenge in the coastal belt, potentially drawing dissatisfied cadres from other major parties as the state gears up for future electoral battles.
