Kolkata, 5/1 : Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his brother, Mohammed Kaif, have been summoned by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for a hearing regarding discrepancies found in their electoral roll enumeration forms in West Bengal. The summons is part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists being conducted across the state.
Officials stated that the issues pertain to “progeny mapping” and “self-mapping” entries, which are essential components of the voter verification process. While Mohammed Shami was born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, he has been a long-time resident of Kolkata and is registered as a voter in Kolkata Municipal Corporation Ward No. 93, falling under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. His prior participation in voting in his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections reportedly triggered scrutiny during this rigorous SIR exercise.
Notices for the hearing were issued on Monday, January 5, from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of south Kolkata, where the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) is overseeing the proceedings.
Mohammed Shami was originally scheduled to appear before the ECI on January 5. However, due to his commitments to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he is representing the Bengal state team in Rajkot, he informed the Election Commission of his inability to attend. Following his request, the Commission has postponed his hearing to a later date, expected to be between January 9 and January 11.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which commenced on December 16, 2025, is a comprehensive “de novo” verification exercise initiated by the ECI to purify the voter registry ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly Elections in West Bengal. The process has drawn attention, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly raising concerns over the conduct of the revision process in the state.
Mohammed Kaif is also expected to attend his scheduled hearing to clarify the observed discrepancies in his enumeration forms. The ECI emphasizes that such summons are a routine part of the verification process and do not necessarily imply wrongdoing, but are crucial for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls.
