In 2021-22, a staggering 281 people lost their lives to lightning strikes in Odisha, with most of the victims residing in rural areas. This raises the pressing question of why lightning-related deaths are so common and how we can prevent them.

Meteorologists have pointed out that the dwindling number of palm trees is a significant factor contributing to these fatalities. In the past, rural areas had a palm tree for every cultivated piece of land, serving as natural lightning rods. When lightning struck, it typically hit these tall palm trees, sparing the people working in the fields. However, over time, the number of palm trees has decreased, leaving people vulnerable.

During rainy and stormy weather, people often seek shelter under the few remaining trees around fields, which can be risky when lightning strikes. Some argue that since there are fewer thatched houses in villages now, there’s less need for palm trees, so they aren’t bothering to plant them.

To combat this issue, in 2018, the State Forest Department initiated a program encouraging rural farmers to plant palm trees. However, this effort faced challenges. Growing a palm tree from seed to sapling takes 3 to 4 years, and misunderstandings hindered the program’s success.

In response to this problem, a special awareness program called ‘Mission Tal’ was launched. Its goal is to reduce lightning-related deaths by sensitizing people in villages about the importance of planting palm trees. They also collaborate with local youth to plant palm seeds. By increasing the number of palm trees, not only can we reduce lightning-related deaths, but we can also protect the environment.

Furthermore, the state government has proposed to the central government that lightning-related deaths should be declared a national calamity. Currently, the state government provides Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to the families of lightning strike victims. The Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Pramila Mallik, has urged the central government to offer assistance on a national level.

In summary, protecting lives from lightning strikes is a critical issue, particularly in rural areas. Planting and preserving palm trees can serve as a simple yet effective way to reduce these tragedies, ensuring the safety of those who work in the fields and contribute to the environment’s well-being. Additionally, government support at the national level is being sought to address this pressing concern.
