Pingali Venkayya was an important person in India’s history. He was born in a place called Bhatlapenumarru in Andhra Pradesh on either August 2, 1876, or 1878. He did many different things in his life.
When he was 19 years old, he joined the British Indian Army and went to South Africa during a war called the Second Boer War. He met Mahatma Gandhi there, who was a famous leader.
During the war, Venkayya noticed that the British soldiers had their own flag, the Union Jack, to salute. But Indians didn’t have a flag to call their own. This made him realize that India needed its own flag.
Later, in 1906, he went to a big meeting of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta. He didn’t like the idea of hoisting the British flag at the Congress meetings. So, he decided to design a flag for the Congress.
He made many different designs for the flag, with different colors and meanings. In 1921, he showed his flag design to Mahatma Gandhi, who was a very important leader in India’s fight for freedom. The flag had three colors: red, green, and white. The red was for Hindus, the green for Muslims, and the white for all other religions in India.
Even though this flag wasn’t officially adopted by the Congress, it started to be used all over the country. Finally, on July 22, 1947, the flag we know today was officially chosen by a group of important leaders.
Venkayya was also good at other things. He knew a lot about rocks and even wrote a book about it. He also knew many languages, like Japanese and Urdu. He was even called “Diamond Venkayya” because he knew about diamonds.
He worked hard for India’s freedom and did many good things. But he passed away in 1963 without a lot of money. In 2009, a stamp was made to remember him, and in 2014, a place in Vijayawada was named after him.
People still remember and respect Pingali Venkayya for his contributions to India’s history and the flag we are proud of today.
