New Delhi: On September 12th, a heart-wrenching incident occurred when Kent, a 6-year-old army dog from the 21st Army Dog Unit, sacrificed his life to protect his handler in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. Kent, a brave Labrador Retriever, was just one among many remarkable canines working diligently in the Indian Army, supporting crucial operations and fulfilling vital roles.
These canine heroes are carefully selected and undergo intensive training to excel in roles such as ‘guard duty,’ ‘patrolling,’ and ‘explosive detection.’ The breeds chosen for this demanding task include the Great Swiss Mountain Dog, German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and Labrador, with each selection subject to rigorous medical assessments to ensure the dogs are physically capable.
The journey of these future army heroes begins at the Remount and Veterinary Corps Center and College in Meerut, where a specialized dog training school was established in 1960. Here, the selected dogs undergo an extensive training program that spans approximately 10 months. The training not only focuses on building their physical stamina but also hones their instincts and abilities to perform under high-pressure situations.
Before officially joining the ranks of the army, these trained dogs must pass comprehensive tests assessing their combat readiness and unwavering loyalty. It is this thorough selection and training process that ensures the Indian Army has a dedicated and skilled team of four-legged soldiers ready to serve and protect the nation.
