“Indian Wrestlers Forced to Compete Without Flag as Wrestling Federation Faces Suspension
Indian wrestlers won’t be able to play under their country’s flag at the upcoming World Championships. This is because the group that takes care of wrestling around the world, called United World Wrestling (UWW), has stopped working with the Indian Wrestling Federation (WFI). The WFI didn’t organize its elections on time, so the UWW is upset with them.
Because of this, the wrestlers from India have to compete without any country’s flag, like they’re neutral. This is a big problem for wrestling in India. The WFI has been in trouble for a while because its old leader was accused of doing bad things, and many of India’s best wrestlers protested for a long time.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) tried to fix things by putting a temporary group in charge of the wrestling federation. They were supposed to organize new elections, but they took too long to do it.
The UWW, which takes care of wrestling worldwide, was worried about this situation and warned in May that they might stop working with the WFI if they didn’t have new elections on time. They said that if this happened, Indian wrestlers would have to compete without their country’s flag. The UWW had already moved an important wrestling championship out of India because of this issue.”
