In a remarkable display of his prowess in the 50-over format, Indian opener Shubman Gill has achieved his career-best ranking in the latest release of the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings. This significant climb in the rankings comes as Gill continues to dazzle in the ICC World Cup year, making a pivotal contribution to Rohit Sharma’s team during their thrilling encounter with Babar Azam’s Pakistan side at the Asia Cup 2023.

During the Super 4 fixture against Pakistan, Gill launched an all-out assault on the Pakistani bowlers, showcasing his batting prowess. The premier Indian batter delivered a scintillating half-century against Babar Azam’s side in the 10th match of the continental tournament. Partnering with captain Rohit Sharma, who was also in splendid form, the in-form Gill played a crucial role in setting the foundation for a match-winning total. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli then went on to notch up remarkable centuries in the rain-marred encounter, sealing a memorable victory for India.

Gill and Rohit, the dynamic opening pair, combined forces to add an impressive 121 runs for the opening wicket against Pakistan. The young sensation contributed significantly with his blazing 58-run knock, which ultimately catapulted him up the ICC rankings. Shubman Gill now holds the prestigious title of being the new No.2 batter in the One Day International (ODI) rankings, an incredible achievement for the rising star.

In the top 10 of the ICC Men’s ODI rankings, three Indian batters have made their mark. Gill, Kohli, and Rohit are the trio representing India in this elite group. Among them, the 24-year-old Gill claims the highest spot, extending his lead over captain Rohit, who sits at the 8th position, and Virat Kohli, who ranks 9th in the latest ICC rankings. Gill’s remarkable performance at the Asia Cup has seen him amass a total of 154 runs, with two half-centuries to his name.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has also been in scintillating form, smashing three consecutive half-centuries in the Asia Cup. Meanwhile, former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has made commendable strides in the rankings after his unbeaten 122-run masterpiece against arch-rivals Pakistan. In contrast, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam continues to reign supreme at the top, holding a commanding lead of over 100 rating points over Shubman Gill. Babar’s teammates, Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman, find themselves in the fifth and tenth positions, respectively, further emphasizing the quality of talent in the Asian cricketing arena.
