Meet Alok Sagar, a remarkable individual who chose a path less traveled after achieving academic excellence. With a prestigious engineering degree from IIT Delhi, followed by a Masters and PhD from Houston, he could have pursued a lucrative career anywhere in the world. Instead, he chose to dedicate his life to serving the remote tribal villages of Madhya Pradesh.
For the past 32 years, Alok has been living amongst the tribal communities of Betul and Hoshangabad districts. Far away from the comforts of city life, he settled in Kochamu, a village with no electricity, roads, or modern amenities. With only a primary school, the village lacked many basic necessities.
In his mission to uplift the tribal people, Alok took to planting trees, sowing the seeds of a greener future. Over 50,000 trees now thrive in the region, thanks to his efforts. But it’s not just the environment he nurtures; it’s the lives of the people he touches.
Having taught and mentored students, including Raghuram Rajan, the former RBI governor, during his time at IIT Delhi, Alok chose to apply his knowledge and education at the grassroots level. He believes that real service to the country lies in helping those in need, not just showcasing degrees.
Despite his illustrious academic background, Alok maintains a humble lifestyle. He owns only three sets of kurtas and a trusty cycle, which he uses to travel through the rugged terrain. His days are spent collecting and distributing seeds, empowering the tribal communities with sustainable practices.
What sets Alok apart is not just his impressive qualifications, but his deep understanding of the languages and dialects spoken by the tribals. This enables him to connect with them on a profound level, gaining their trust and respect.
However, his commitment to service hasn’t always been smooth sailing. During a recent district election, local authorities grew suspicious of this unassuming man living amongst the tribals. They were taken aback when they verified his qualifications and found them to be true.
